Vintage Burton Etched Mother of Pearl Buttons x5
Very early 20th century vintage mother-of-pearl buttons with an unusual swirly etched design & understated iridescent shimmer. Please refer to the photos for both front and back views.
Each button measures approximately 25.4mm and with 2 holes. These buttons are also quite thick circa 2.2mm, rarely found these days. Suitable for jackets, skirts & trousers. Probably not suitable for lightweight delicate fabrics. Please note that slight variations in size and shape may occur due to the nature of production and the shell. Made from genuine mother-of-pearl, these roundish buttons have a unique, high-quality finish and timeless appeal.
These buttons were made in Germany at a former factory specialising in high quality (& thicker shell) mother of pearl buttons. The majority of the buttons sourced from there were from the turn of the 20th century to circa 1960s. Due to the manufacturing processes at the time the buttons are less uniform and appear a little more rustic than highly finished & polished contemporary buttons and they are often thicker than today’s contemporary buttons. Contemporary mother of pearl buttons tend to be much thinner and backed onto plastic to reinforce them. So the shape and even the thickness of these vintage buttons may vary with each button. In some of the photos from the collections of the German sourced buttons, it may look like the buttons have chips, these are not chips but have smooth edges and add to the character of the buttons.
